Match Reports - 2011/12 Season

Sunday  15th January – Friendly - Away

Crowborough 15 – Chichester ‘B’ 17

Crowborough travelled to West Sussex to play Chichester who were lying 2nd in the league. The game was a very closely contested match from the outset with both teams attacking with a purpose. Crowborough’s defence was resolute and from turnover ball in their own half the backs ran the ball straight through Chichester with Ollie Canning scoring a try wide out.  The home side responded with two tries, each time the scorer seemed to glide through the Crowborough line. The score at half time was 10-5.

The Crowborough backs began to make holes in the home defence but could not quite make the final break. Dan Chalklin eventually broke the line and ran half the length of the pitch, held the ball up well for Tom Nelson to score with a swallow dive. Chichester came straight back with their large No 8 scoring under the posts.

At 17-10 with not long to play Crowborough realised that they had to step up a gear and they battered away at Chichester, and Fergus Millson scored Crowborough’s third try with only minutes left on the clock. Unfortunately the conversion was missed, leaving Crowborough two points short of what would have been a deserved draw.

Crowborough’s man of the match was Ollie Canning.

Next week Crowborough host Lewes at Stone Cross for a friendly match.

Sunday 4th December – League - Home

Crowborough 7 – Hove ‘B’ 22

Crowborough hosted the league leaders from Hove on Sunday. Whilst the opening skirmishes were fairly even, Hove looked the sharper team and soon opened up a 12-0 lead in the first 15 minutes. Crowborough responded with a lot more urgency and George Bigwood intercepted a Hove pass to score under the posts. Hove came back at Crowborough with their third try and at half time the score was 17-7 to the visitors. A serious looking injury to one of the Crowborough players (Ollie Beaumont) meant the match had to be moved to the adjacent pitch. Ollie had a brief stay in hospital but thankfully was soon home again, somewhat battered and bruised.

The second half started with Crowborough fired up to get back on even terms. They spent 15 minutes battering away at the Hove players, most of who were on or behind their try-line. Although Crowborough had a try disallowed they could not make the final break through a very resolute defence. The half remained scoreless until Hove scored their fourth try right at the final whistle. The Crowborough team should take great credit from their performance against a well drilled and organized Hove team. If the home team had started the game the way they started the second half then a different score might have resulted.

The Crowborough man of the match was Tom Glen.

Sunday 20th November – League - Home

Crowborough 5 – Haywards Heath 0

Crowborough pressured the visitors from the off and Fergus Millson scored an unconverted try within ten minutes. That proved to be the only points of the morning.

Haywards Heath had arrived with a team of 14 and during the match suffered two injuries which meant they ended the game with only 12 fit players. Crowborough had to adjust their numbers each time as the rules dictate that a side may only have one extra player at any time. Despite having a majority of possession and territorial advantage Crowborough were unable to break down a resolute defence from the visitors.

Crowborough now have a week off from league matches to prepare for the visit of Hove U16 B at the beginning of December.

Sunday 6th November – Friendly - Away

Aylesford 'B' 26 – Crowborough 17

Crowborough travelled into Kent with an almost full strength team for their second away fixture against a strong Aylesford side. The first half was scoreless with both sides’ defences preventing each other from getting much further than the 22m lines.

Aylesford started the second half with the wind behind them and, making much better use of the conditions, scored the opening try. Crowborough attacked straight from the restart and scored in the corner.  The rest of the game was a tit for tat affair with Aylesford scoring first and Crowborough responding with a try.

In the end it was a try count of 4 vs 3. All of Crowborough’s tries were scored by the forwards: Stephen Pugh, Fergus Millson and Dominic Williams.

The two sides were very evenly matched and this is a fixture that Crowborough look forward to being able to return the hospitality.

Crowborough’s man of the match was Joe Hawkins.

Sunday 16th October – League - Away

Helstorm 7 – Crowborough 20

Crowborough battle to a hard fought win

Under a bright blue sky Crowborough were the slower to start and soon found themselves behind after five minutes to a converted try, scored by the Helstorm scrum-half running straight through a number of missed tackles.

Crowborough responded to the rude awakening knowing they needed to take control of the game.  Ten minutes later Olly Canning scored a solo try for the visitors from a scrum. On the half hour Lawrence Berry, not to be outdone by his fly half, scored a similar try having sold a wonderful dummy to the full back. The sides turned around at the interval, with Crowborough leading 10-7.

Crowborough began the second half the way they should have started the match, spending the next 15 minutes camped in home side territory. A scrum taken against the head, wonderful quick hands in the backs, led to a try by Jake Crouch in the corner. The winger hurt himself in the process and had to be replaced.

The home side battered the visitors defence and were eventually thwarted by Dominic Williams (prop!) kicking the ball downfield and into touch. A home lineout on their own 22 metre line was disrupted by Crowborough and Fergus Millson found his way to score under the posts.

Helstorm spent the last few minutes of the game pressing hard for a score but blanket defence from Crowborough managed to keep them out. The game ended, Crowborough knowing they had had a real battle on their hands. Joe Hawkins was the worthy man of the match. A number of substitutions had been made during the game, some forced by injury, but the strength in numbers shows that Crowborough have high hopes for coming matches.

Apologies to Stephen Pugh who was in fact the scorer of Crowborough’s first try last weekend. Never mind Fergus, you did score today.

Sunday 9th October – League - Home

Crowborough 33 – Bognor 0

Crowborough exerted pressure on Bognor right from the start. Stout defence from the visitors, ably led by their fly half, coupled with conceding too many penalties meant that Crowborough had to wait nearly 30 minutes before Fergus Milson opened the scoring. Crowborough only led 7-0 at half time despite having had the lion’s share of territory.

The home side began the second half just where they had left off at half time and within 5 minutes scored again. A quickly taken tap penalty followed by slick hands in the backs allowed George Bigwood to run round and touch down almost under the posts. Crowborough now began to turn the screw on their visitors, winning a Bognor scrum and the try was scored by the Crowborough scrum half (Lawrence Berry).

The home side made a series of substitutions in the forwards as the rather unseasonal temperatures took their toll on both sides. With 15 minutes left, a Bognor player was yellow carded giving the home side a player advantage. Another quickly taken penalty resulted in another try, this time by Dominic Williams who was helped over the line by the whole pack.

Crowborough now made some changes in the backs and the fresh players began to punch holes in the visitors defence. A series of quick passes and some straight running lines ended in another try by the backs, this time by the replacement centre, Tom Nelson. With less than a couple of minutes to go Crowborough had a player sin binned. The referee blew the last whistle of the match, Crowborough winning 33-0.

The home side man of the match was Olly Canning who marshalled his backs well, and with a kicking conversion score of 4 out of 5 fully deserved his award. This was one of the best U16 team performances to date, and coupled with the number of new players Crowborough have acquired, we can look forward to the rest of the season with high hopes.

Sunday 25th September – League - Away

Crawley 10 – Crowborough 7

Crowborough U16 travelled to Crawley, with a few players missing and a number of new ones, looking to repeat their win at the end of last season. The first half was end to end play, both defences cancelling out excellent attacking moves from both sides. Crowborough scored shortly before half time and the conversion was successful.

Crawley started the second half obviously having had a serious team talk and they were fired up to reverse the score. The Crowborough defence managed to hold out until the Crawley No 3 made a bullocking run at the defence that ended up with a try which was unconverted.

Crowborough went looking for more points but it was Crawley who scored a second try with 5 minutes left. Despite lots of interplay between backs and forwards, Crowborough were unable to break the home defence. Like last year’s result the score-line reflects just how closely matched these two sides are.

Crawley vs Crowborough

Result: Crawley 17 – Crowborough 19

Crowborough travelled to West Sussex to face a strong Crawley U15. The visitors carried on from their victory over East Grinstead the previous week with a solid team performance. Their forwards dominated the first half with three tries, two from Dominic Williams and one from Tom Glenn. Jamie Bird converted two of them. Crawley had responded with a well worked unconverted try with a half time score of 19-5 to Crowborough. As in the first game between these two sides last year, Crawley started the stronger in the second half scoring two tries with only one of them converted. The last five minutes were nail biting with the play moving from end to end of the pitch. Crowborough’s tackling was ferocious and they managed to keep the home team out of penalty range. The match ended with Crowborough camped in the Crawley 22 but fine defence forced the Crowborough player into touch. It was a fast and furious game with stern tackling from both sides; Crowborough have now shown their true potential in their last two games. Next week they travel to Bognor Regis for the final round of league games.

 Crowborough v Hellstorm – Sunday 14th November

The first home match of the season was played in cold, wet conditions and against a Hellstorm team bolstered with some Crowborough substitutes. The game plan was immediately disrupted by the necessity of playing a six man scrum, but the players quickly adjusted to a new line up.

The men in red & white kicked off and it was immediately obvious that they were in no mood to play on the back foot. With plenty of possession they held on to territory and maintained it through good support play, a lesson learned from last week. The forwards too dominated in the rucks, although Hellstorm gave a good showing at scrum time.

There were a couple of sniping breaks from Lawrence Berry after which the back line started playing the ball amongst themselves and running some nice, straight lines. Olly Canning went over for the first try, although the extra points went begging as the ball bounced off the crossbar. Lawrence Berry crossed the line shortly after & George Bigwood later in the first half to give ‘Boro a useful lead.

Things slowed down a little in the second half with Crowborough again taking their foot of the gas and making hard work of getting and keeping possession. This meant that much of the third quarter was spent in the wrong half of the pitch with Hellstorm looking to make the best of the possession that was granted to them. There was solid work from the subs that came on, particularly Jack Knapp who made a couple of stunning tackles and Henry Boddy who made some useful breaks.

Crowborough pulled it back in the final quarter although ill-discipline cost them several penalties, one of which allowed Hellstorm to cross the line under the posts for seven points. The last few minutes were disrupted by injury scares although Dominic Williams did barrel over for a final try.

This was a good first victory for the under 15’s and the first step on the path to many more.

Final score: 33 – 7

Man of the match: Jordan Jarrett.

Sunday 7th November 2010.

Under 15's - Crawley V Crowborough - Away - Freindly.

The match started at pace and the ‘Boro boys quickly found themselves on the back foot, with Crawley finding themselves under the posts for a penalty, duly converted, to give them a 3-0 lead.

From then on, the first half belonged to the men in red. Dominant in the scrum and ruck, they found themselves with plenty of ball which they kept in the Crawley half of the pitch. The home team appeared to be at sixes and sevens, but managed to repel wave after wave of ‘Boro attack, sometimes more by luck than judgement. There were several close calls for them, but ‘Boro couldn’t convert the possession into points. Eventually, the try came, Jack Weedon scoring a well-deserved try. The conversion points went begging so at the half time whistle, ‘Boro led 5-3. Having dominated the first 30 minutes, more of the same was demanded by the coaching team.

Crawley came back with a vengeance in the second half, catching ‘Boro off guard and scoring a quick try. Crowborough were somewhat shell-shocked, but Crawley maintained possession of the ball and in a reverse of the first 30 minutes, camped at the ‘Boro end. ‘Boro continued to tackle and ruck well, but the passion of the first half was clearly absent, so lacked ferocity and intent. Crawley went over again and once more in the dying minutes of the game, giving Crowborough a harsh lesson in why the game should be played to the final whistle.

Despite the final score, there is much improvement in Crowborough’s game and the lessons will be applied at the forthcoming home league match v Hellstorm.

Score: Crawley 22 – Crowborough 5.

Man of the match this week was Fergus Millson, Well Done !

Hove U 15’s v Crowborough U15’s – Sunday 3rd October 2010

The threatened rain held off long enough for us to enjoy dry if blustery conditions for the first league match of the season. There were 15 names on the team sheet, but with injuries and absence we were denied the luxury of substitutes and three players new to the squad, Calum Avery, Fergus Millson and Jordan Jarrett all got their first starts.

From the outset, ‘Boro seemed to have learned some of the lessons from the previous week’s friendly against East Grinstead. Rucking was powerful and aggressive, with the ball coming back quickly to scrum half Lawrence Berry or being picked up and driven on by the likes of Alex o’ Sullivan and Will Matkins. Breaks by both forwards and backs made useful territory and possession was maintained because of excellent support and keeping the ball in contact. There was strong running from George Bigwood and Dan Chalklin until the latter was forced from the pitch with an injury to his jaw.

‘Boro have a big pack with the likes of Dom Williams, Andrew Orchard and captain Stephen Pugh making good inroads at scrummage time. We managed to win the majority of our own scrums and held our position when defending. An injury to no.8 Henry Boddy limited options somewhat, but there is definite promise.

Hove were keen to attack from the off and soon exposed the ‘Boro weakness in the tackle. There were some strong tackling from everybody including Keenan Smith, Oliver Canning, Jack Weedon, George, Fergus & Jordan. However, for as many tackles as we made we missed one and coupled with a weakness at the blindside of the scrum, Hove were soon running tries in.

The second half saw ‘Boro steel themselves and for a period of 20 minutes enjoyed a purple patch, putting Hove under pressure. Whilst this wasn’t converted into points had ‘Boro played like this from the first whistle the result, 49-0, may have been very different.

Man of the match – despite the loss: Calum Avery

Season 2009/2010

Sunday 24th January 2010 - Home - Friendly - Horsham `B`

Crowborough U14’s v Horsham U14’s `B`

Playing in fine conditions and a rare bit of sun at times, the weather belied the fact that this was first time that many of the players has picked up an oval ball since before Christmas. Despite this and the fact that some were playing in unfamiliar conditions, the small squad set themselves the goal of playing passionate and aggressive rugby from the first blow of the whistle.

Horsham scored all too quickly when a hard fought defence was finally breached, the ball spinning out wide for a try. Nevertheless, this was something new for Crowborough who for the first time this season seemed to have found an appetite for defence, with tackle after tackle coming in. At the scrum, Horsham initially seemed to have the advantage but as the first half progressed things evened up a little as the Crowborough tight five found their footing. Wave after wave of Horsham attacks were snuffed out by stout-hearted aggressive defence, although the visitors soon exposed and exploited a Crowborough weakness, not scrapping for the ball on the floor. This resulted in Horsham getting plenty of ball which they used to great effect, crossing the try line a number of times. The second half continued in much the same vein, although the Crows game was disrupted by the loss of scrum half Lawrence Berry.

It was pleasing to note the spirit with which Crowborough played this game. There was new-found determination and passion for the duration of the game and whilst there was a certain amount of ring rust to shake off, there were many, many positive green shoots that can be nurtured for the rest of the season. There were many who showed individual flashes of brilliance. George Bigwood tackled like a demon and was calm under pressure and Ata Yazicilar made a couple of nice breaks. Jack Weedon continues to show a talent for ripping the ball of the opposition, but the coaches Man of the Match was Henry Boddy. He seemed to be everywhere at once, ball in hand charging at Horsham or ensuring that another attack was disrupted.

Next match – home v Edenbridge on 31st January.

Sunday 22nd November 2009 - Away

Hastings 46 - Crowborough 0 (League)

Travelling to Hastings in very wet ad blustrey conditions, the under 14's played their first league match of the season. The team comprised 2 new players, Ata and George, the former having only joined us on Tuesday.
As expected , Hastings played a forwards dominated game, using their two biggest players to muscle the ball upfield at every opportunity. This tactic bore fruit for them and was responsible for at least four of their tries. Crowborough were stout hearted in the tackle, but needed to make more of them to make a difference.
From a Crowborough point of view, there were encouraging signs, especially at the scrummage, which was a more than even contest. Flanker Jack Weedon deserves special mention for harrying the opposition scrum half, causing him to make an error seemingly every time he laid hands on the ball.
Despite the conditions, the backs were confident with the ball in hand and showed the desire to play some attacking rugby. With more game time this is promising for the future. Full back George Bigwood made several good breaks and showed an excellent turn of speed and grace under pressure.
Man of the match and winner of the "Down the drink and scoff a Mars bar"competition - George Bigwood.
Next game - Edenbridge at Home, Sunday 29th November.
