Match Reports for 2011/12 Season
Sunday 6th November
Crowborough ‘’A’ Festival - Home
Festival Summary
Crowborough 5 – Cranbrook 0
Crowborough 4 – Eastbourne 0
Crowborough 3 – Haywards Heath 0
Another Crowborough A Festival came to end on Sunday and once again, the Crowborough Under 10s excelled themselves. It is not just the fact they convincingly beat three of the strongest clubs in the area, nor that they were able to run in 12 very good tries. No, what really stands out to me is that this was achieved without conceding a single try. In fact, I can only recall a couple of occasions when the competition looked close to scoring.
Other than the opening two minutes of the first match against Cranbrook, the Crowborough defensive line was, for the most part, impenetrable. Every player committed to tackles, rucks and mauls to constantly force the competition back. Robbie, Henry and Raph were quick to track across from the wings to make crucial tackles when the opposition did break through.
The quality of rucking from all four teams was very good with players showing great commitment and determination. It was good to see the Crowborough team using their feet more to ruck the ball back but occasionally they were a little slow to pick up when it did finally come out and fell victim to quick (sometimes off-side) opposition, particularly in the Haywards Heath match. It is only in past couple of weeks that we have started to working on mauling but it was good to see these techniques come into match play.
Sammy, Hayden, Furry, Rupert and Dan showed great determination. Several times Crowborough drove their maul 10-15m up the field to create try scoring positions. Hopefully the boys learnt the value of this and just how fast territory can be gained (or lost).
Sammy reminded me of the Tasmanian Devil in the way that he fought to rip the ball away from the opposition and Dan’s power was very evident, he was very unlucky to have his push-over try disallowed against Eastbourne.
When play did break down, Dan, Rupert, Hayden and Furry were a force to be reckoned with in the scrums, not necessarily the biggest front row on the field but their technique and drive took at least 5 against the head.
On their own put-in the solid scrummage allowed Sammy the option to peel off the back of the scrum and take the first tackle before elegantly off loading to Rueben who proceeded to cut his way through the opposition’s defence. This simple move was so effective and a joy to watch.
In attack the backs were in fine form. Sammy provided quick accurate ball to Rueben, Jack and Sam who inked well to move the ball down the line creating gaps and overlaps. When the ball moved out to the wing Henry and Robbie scored lovely tries in the corners.
Robbie’s first try against Cranbrook really did open the floodgates and after just coming on, Raph was unlucky not to score, just being bundled into touch by a strong HH defence.
Sam took the ball at pace and crashed through to score in his usual unstoppable style, this really is a secret weapon that we need to bring into our set-pieces.
Jack was always in support of the ball carrier and so quick up on the opposition (quick, not off-side). They were often caught by surprise, evident in the final few seconds of the match against Haywards Heath when Jack plucked the ball from the opposition’s hands to score the third try - classic.
In summary, a great team performance which shows the foundation and confidence a good defence provides.
Sunday 2nd October
Crawley Festival - Away
The team that played away at Crawley had a rough ride on Sunday. We were in a pool that contained the four best team in Sussex, Chichester, Haywards Heath and Heathfield, so we knew it was going to be hard going. The team drew all three of there pool games in difficult conditions. However, some of the teams in the pool were beaten so we did not win the pool.
We were then through to the Silver Plate and faced Eastbourne. We lost to the 3 – 1; this was our first defeat in three years and was always going to happen at some stage. In many ways this was a good lesson for the boys to learn.
Next we were up against Haywards Heath, who had just beaten Eastbourne so our hopes were not set high, especially as it was now around 28˚C and we had been waiting for an hour. However, the boys were like a different team and played very good rugby with great sprit and won the match 3 -1. This meant that we had won the Silver Plate and have brought some more silverware back to the club.
Also, Crawley gave each team a trophy to award to their “player of the competition”. There were a number of boys who stood out, but the choice was and easy one in the end and he cemented it in the last game buy scoring a great try from well within his own half. Robbie very much deserved to win this as he stepped up his game in what were hard conditions.
Match Reports for 2010/11 Season
Uckfield Festival.
On Sunday 17th April Crowborough RFC attended the Uckfield Festival ad two of their squads had great results on the day.
Crowborough’s Under 9 `A` squad have had a great season and not lost a single game along with retaining both the East Sussex County and Sussex County Championship titles.
Stephen Hart, Under 9 Head Coach, said “we took all our players to this festival to give the development squad some well deserved tournament practice”.
The development team played some great rugby and found success against Tonbridge Juddians in a very physical game. They showed great promise for next season. The `A` squad got off to a slow start against East Grinstead but won by 3 tries to 1. They then went on to beat Edenbridge 4 -1, Eastbourne 2 – 0 and Uckfield early in the second half 7 – 0. This gave them a place in the final against Horsham who they beat 5 – 0.
Stephen said, “this is the best way to end a great season, in the last 4 tournament this team have scored 62 tries and only conceded 3”.

County Final's 10th April 2011.
Crowborough Under 9’s Rugby Team do it again……
On Sunday 10th April 2011 Crowborough was host to the Whole of Sussex Finals, where the East and West Sussex Champions contest the title across the age ranges.
Stephen Hart, Event organizer, Chair of Mini Section and Under 9 Head Coach said “this is always a great day and to host and organise it is a honour for the club and was made even more special as my Under 9 team were competing again for the title”. He also said “playing the final with so many home supporters was a great experience for the team”
The Under 9 game was between Crowborough who were the reigning Sussex County and East Sussex champions and Chichester, the current West Sussex County Champions, a repeat of last years final. It was obvious from the kick off that this was going to be a very close and competitive game.
The Chichester side were very big and physical and soon set up camp in Crowborough half. However, the Crowborough team who are the masters of defence absorbed all pressure. It was a very tenses first half and it ended with no tries being scored.
The second half stated in a very similar way but now Chichester were beginning to get frustrated with the superb Crowborough defence and stared making mistake. The Crowborough team capitalized on these with an early in the half when a stunning try was scored by Scrum Half Sammy Marchesi. This unsettled the Chichester side even more and it was Crowborough’s turn to pile on the pressure. A stunning move by Centre Samuel Eyres produced a great pass that was picked up by Fly Half Reubin Hart who nailed the try in the corner. Soon after that the whistle went and Crowborough had retained there Sussex Championship Title by 2 clear tries. Stephen said “this is a great result for the boys who have worked so hard again this year and are a credit to themselves, their coaches, their parents and the club”. He also said “ to achieve this on the transition year between TAG and full contact is a testament to their ability and commitment to the sport”.
The team on the day were, Dan Young, Henri Clemens, Rupert Flynn, Samuel Marchesi, Reubin Hart, Samule Eyres, Jack Kingham, Rafael Singleton, Henry Martin, Louis Jackson, Tom Court and Jake Reet O’Neail.
The other matches played on the day were;
Under 7 - Brighton 10 Haywards Heath 9
Under 8 - Brighton 4 Hove 5
Under 10 - Brighton 0 Hove 0 (shared title)
Under 11 - Brighton 4 Horsham 3
Under 12 - Brighton 6 Haywards Heat 0.
The awards were presented by Peter Bailey, Sussex RFU President and 2 Players form the Harlequins, Rory Clegg and Seb Stegmen. If you would like to join such a successful and friendly club please ring Stephen Hart on 07768811914.

East Sussex Festival 13th March 2011.
The under 9’s entered this competition as the reigning East Sussex and Whole of Sussex County Champions and full of hope being successful again, and they did not disappoint. The team had a flying start against Uckfiled who they beat 6 – 0 in seven minutes and Lewes 6 – 0 in eight minutes; the rule is that if a team is 6 clear tries up the game must end. Then they faced Brighton, who they beat in last years final. This was a very different game with two very evenly matched teams and ended in a 0 – 0 draw. Stephen Hart, Mini Section Chair and U9 Head Coach said “ this was a great game of rugby, both the Brighton coach and I decided we had aged 10 years just watching it”. So the U9’s had won their pool game and went to face East Grinstead in the Semi final. The game was again very tight one with the result ending in a 1 – 1 draw. Crowborough had dominated all their games so far in the tournament and had only conceded one tri and had scored13 and deserved to go through to the final against Heathfield.

Sunday 9th January 2011.
Away at East Grinstead.
The under nines visited East Grinstead on the 9th January for some joint training and some matches.
The training sessions were every well organized and both clubs learnt plenty from each other. We then split our teams out in to the A’s and the B’s.
The B team played some of the best Rugby they have ever played and continue to grow in both stature and strength. They won their match with ease 10 tries to 0.
The A team consisted of only 7 players and were up against 8 of the largest East Grinstead players. This should have given East Grinstead two advantages; but this lack of numbers and physical size made no difference.
The A team won their match 6 tries to 2.
Another great results for the teams, well done boys.

Sunday 7th November 2010.
Crowborough `A` Festival
The under 9’s entered 2 teams the Lions and the Tigers The Under 9 Lions have continued there three year winning streak with a great display of very gutsy performances on the day. Having won the Hastings festival with ease they went in to this festival full of confidence.
As the Sussex County Champions they meet the Kent County Champions, Sevenoaks, in their first game. This was a very hard fought game but ended in a draw at 0 – 0. The team progressed through the pool stage and ended up in the Cup Semi Final with Tunbridge Wells, this ended with a Crowborough victory by 1 try.
This put them in the Cup final with Sevenoaks. Both teams played the sort of Rugby you would expect from a pair of County Champions and resulted in a 1-1 draw at the end of full time. As the teams had played each other twice that day and drawn on both occasions it was decided to share the cup.
The Tigers played in there first festival this season and performed very well. They continued to improve with each game and got into the Plate final. Here they came up against a very strong Haywards Heath. The Tigers played very well against such strong opposition and only conceded one try. So the tigers came away with the Plate runners up trophy and this was well deserved.
Sunday 10th October 2010.
Hastings & Bexhill Festival
Pool Games
East Grinstead 0 Crowborough 8
Sevenoaks 1 Crowborough 5
Cranbrook 1 Crowborough 4
Semi Final - Lewes 0 Crowborough 4
Final - Heathfield 0 Crowbrough 3
This is a great result, scoring 24 tires and only conceding 2.
The boys had a very tough final against Heathfield who were very aggressive and physical (and played a little dirty, as Jack Kingham found out). However, our boys matched their aggression and we drove them back time and time again with great attacking skills and forward play. The score above shows how good we were defense. The whole team played very well and had great shape and structure throughout all the games, it was good to see how the subs fitted in to this with apparent ease. It was a pleasure to watch, albeit a little stressful, with the boys knowing and keeping to their positions. No other team did that on the day.
It was also great to see forwards scoring tries, Jake and Dan getting two each; the normal suspects scored the rest, Scott, Jack K, Reubin, Sammy and Sam E.
Well done to all Concerned - another fantastic result ....

Sunday 3rd October 2010.
The under 9’s had their first competitive outing in contact rugby on Sunday against Edenbridge. The day started with a very long training session with the Edenbridge team; some good drills were undertaken but the Crowborough team was chomping at the bit to pay a game.We only had time to play a match of 20 minutes in the pouring rain but the U9’s started this season as they left the last one and that was a very emphatic win. Crowborough ran in 7 tries. In reply Edenbridge struggled to get in to the Crowboroughs half and did not score. They did come close once, only to have their player tackled in to touch on the tri line by Reubin. The U9’s dominated with both their forwards and backs and their tackling was excellent. The usual suspects ran in most of our tries but there were also excellent tries for Matthew Good and Jack Hurst. The U9’s still have a lot to learn but are off to a good start.

The B team at T wells were the runner up; Crowborough vs Cobham 8 – 7Crowbroough vs Cranbrook 4 – 5Crowborough vs Ols E 7 -3 (semi)Crowborough 2 – 6 in the final
This is a great result from the lads especially after last weekend, they should be very proud of themselves. Also thanks to Neal and Brandon for organizing them on the day.,
The A team dominated every game they played including the final against Lewes, scoring 41 tries and only conceding 12. The results were, Crowborough vs Stanford 8 – 3, Crowborough vs Haywards Heath 10 – 4, Crowborough vs Eastbourne 7 - 1, Crowborough vs Uckfeild 9 - 2 and in the final Crowborough beat Lewes 7 -2.
These results were excellent and I could not have asked any more of the boys, they showed why they are Country Champions and I received a lot of complements about the way the played. Thanks to Shaun for helping me on the day. This is a great way to end the season. The whole under 8 team is clearly the most successful squad that exists at the club with the following success's;
Hastings Festival , Joint winners - 11th October 2009,
East Sussex County Championship - Winners - 14th March 2010,
Crowborough `B` Festival - Winners - 28th March 2010,

----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------Crowborough RFC Under 8’s Crowned Sussex Champions
On Sunday 11th April, the annual Sussex Rugby Finals took place between the East (Crowborough) and West Sussex (Chichester) County Champions at Pulborough RFC.
The under 8 section was represented by Crowborough and Chichester, the current Sussex Champions, and kicked off at 11.05. As you would expect at this level the game was being played by two very well drilled and disciplined sides. The first half witnessed some excellent free flowing rugby and ended 4 all. The second half was a very different story, Crowborough were devastating in defence causing Chichester to make many errors that were then converted into possession and try scoring opportunities. The final score was 7 – 4 to Crowborough who are now the whole of Sussex Country Champions.
Stephen Hart, under 8 head coach and Chair of the Mini section for Crowborough, said “this is great result for the team who have worked so hard this year. It is also excellent for our club to be represented at this level, especially when you consider the size of Crowborough when compared to Brighton etc” . Stephen also said” it has been a very long time since the club won this title and it is a reflection of the commitment, team work , dedication to rugby, each other and the club shown by the Under 8 players and coaches.
The Under 8’s have been very successful this year winning four festivals including the Crowborough B Festival just before Easter. Stephen said “ it is a privilege to be working with such a remarkable group children, coaches and parents and I believe that our success comes from this combination”.
The team on the day was, Reubin Hart, Rafael Singleton, Scott Robinson, Samuel Ayres, Jake Reet-O’Neil, Jack Kingham, Samuel Marchesi, Hayden Tibbals, Henry Martin and Daniel Young.

Sunday 28th March 2010 - Crowborough `B` Festival @ Home.
The Under 8 B team did a great job on Sunday at our `B` festival. They were the reigning champions and had a lot to live up to. They played some great Rugby and were the winners again. Along the way they beat Cranbrook 6 – 5 and thus were also the winners of the Cran vs Crow Cup which we play for every time we meet.
Great job boys!!!
Steve
Sunday 14th March 2010 - East Sussex Festival Hosted by Eastbourne RFC.
Dear All
Firstly a big thank you to all the parents who turned up at both the Club and Eastbourne on Sunday, particularly the Mums! I have been told by Neal that the following lads turned up for training on Sunday at the Club; Jack Hurst, Freddie, Robbie Tom & Jake. Well done lads, I have been told you trained with the Under 9 and Under 11’s and had loads of fun as well as a good training session. Also thanks to Neal for organizing this.
The other lads were away at the East Sussex Festival and just in case you do not know, or believe it etc, THEY WON: and not a toss of a coin in sight!! The results were as follows; They beat East Grinstead 4 – 0 (2 tries to Scott and 2 to Reubin)They beat Uckfield 4 – 0 (2 tries to Reubin, 1 to Jack K and 1 to Harry)They beat Heathfield in the semi-final 5 – 2 (3 to Jack K, 1 to Reubin and 1 to Sammy)And they beat Brighton in the final 4 – 3 (3 tries to Reubin, one form our own tri line up the whole length of the pitch, and 1 from Scott) Reubin was Man of the tournament. The guys were devastating in attack and very sound in defense and that frustrated both Heathfield and Brighton and we took advantage of that. The support given by Non Furry, Dan, Sam E, Hayden and Raff was instrumental in tagging, attacking and supporting. This is an amazing result when you consider the size of our club, we do punch higher than our weight at times. I would also like to thank Shaun for his support, advice and guidance during the festival. I know we are so proud of the boys who truly deserved to win a competition at this level as they are a cracking team and have been knocked out at this level before by a toss of a coin.
Steve

Sunday 13th December - Away at Hove RFC.
Hove only had 10 active players. Because we only had 5-a-side and Hove didn't have a clear A and B we mixed up the teams a little.
Team 1: Reuben (captain), Sam Eyres, Hayden, Scott & DanWon 16-4 (approx. kinda lost count) with several disallowed.
---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Sunday 22nd November 2009 - Home - Against Tunbridge Wells.
The Under 8’s had a good result against Tunbridge Wells on Sunday. The A team ran in 16 tries and only conceded 2; this was an excellent result as the Coach's were not on the pitch to guide them, they did all this on their own.
Our B team also won with a clear margin of 3 tries.
The weather condition's were challenging - very wet and muddy but the lads did us proud again.
Steve

Tonbridge Juddians 2 - Crowborough `A` 10
Edenbridge 2 - Crowborough `B` 6
Tonbridge Juddians 3 - Crowborough `B` 6.
Excellent Result - Well done everyone.

Match update on Hastings Festival - 11th October 2009 - Under 8's
What can I say, this Sunday all the boys were fantastic. It was a TRI FEST with the following results.
We won our pool with easy wins over Cranbrook (6-2), Lewes (6-2), Hove (6-2) and East Grinstead (7-1) In the East Grinstead game the team played some of the best Rugby I have seen bringing an unbeaten team to their knees. In the final we came up against a very talented Heathfield team and the final score was 4 all. We decided to share the win but we had to toss a coin for the trophies as Hastings only had enough for one team. Unfortunately we lost the toss (again). Tris were scored by Reubin (11), Sammy (8), Non Furry (3), Rafael (3), Scott (2), Sam (1) and Jack K (1). There was great support from all the other team members (Jack H, Hayden, Furry, Harry and Dan) especially the Subs who were always ready to come on and play at a high standard. So off to a great start again with a win! I would also like to thank all the parents whose support make the coaching team job so much more fun and effective.
Thanks Steve
